The Terraformers Canadian Tundra Conservation Foundation is a group of people dedicated to conserving and studying the Tundra Biome. They are doing this by trying to restore polluted Tundra areas by studying clean ones. They are also trying to spread awareness about the conservation of the Tundra biome. But humans are also hurting the Tundra. Because we haven't created a useable energy source to power our daily needs, such as cars, airplanes, lighting etc. People are still intent on digging up the Alaskan and Canadian wilderness for oil. There are frequent oil spills that kill many animals which are important to the ecosystem. If we continue to do thing such as this without restoring the wilderness, the Tundra biome may disappear forever.
A few other major problems in the Tundra biome are mentioned below:
The Tundra biome is still suffering from Global Warming. This is created by greenhouse gasses, especially carbon dioxide, enhancing the greenhouse effect. This is when the buildup of gasses traps heat in our atmosphere. We need the greenhouse effect to survive, because without it we would freeze. But, too much of it will, in theroy, melt the polar ice caps. This effect also will destoy the permafrost in the Tundra, and disrupt the ecosystem. The species that live there and require the permafrost.
Global Warming affects all of the Tundra's animals, but in particular, the Polar Bear. Because of the melting ice caps, the polar bears can't find enough ice flows to hunt or travel to land in the summer. Polar bears are decreasing rapidly in population, because of these issues. The species are not finding enough food, and so are starving and drowning trying to swim from ice flow to land without enough stamina.
Humans are attempting to fix these problems, but often we don't succeed. Here are the solutions that we thought of:
To prevent Global Warming, we need to find an alternate resource. A few possibilities are as follows: Solar energy, Wind energy, Geothermal energy, Methane gasses released from garbage, Hydrogen gasses, and, Ethinol from corn or other plants. If we can do this, the only remaining problem would be reducin the greenhouse gasses effect on the world. We would need to find a way to somehow clean the atmosphere. Maybe we could release a chemical that would nuetralize carbon dioxide.
Finding an alternate source could also help with the oil. We wouldn't need to dig up the Tundra for power. We could clean up the oil spills, and reintroduce the species to the Tundra. Hopefully, in a few years, the Tundra can be back to normal.
